When is the Best Time to Go on Safari in Tanzania?
One of the most popular questions I get asked almost every day is: "Alice, when is the best time to go on a safari?"
And every time, I want to answer with another question: "What kind of safari do you want to see?"
Because Tanzania covers almost a million square kilometers. And the most amazing part is that about 40% of the country is made up of national parks, reserves, and protected natural areas.
Essentially, safaris in Tanzania happen all year round. It's not like in January the animals all go on vacation together and only return in July. The animals don't go anywhere.
What does change is:
- the landscapes;
- the weather;
- the location of the migration;
- the concentration of animals.
That's exactly why the main secret to a perfect safari isn't choosing the right month. The real secret is choosing the right park. And for that, you know who to contact 😉
Serengeti: My Favorite Season is March and Early April
I'm about to say something that might give some travel agents a mild heart attack. My favorite time in the Serengeti is not August. And it’s not even September. It’s March and early April. Yes, the very period that many refer to as the "green season."
During this time, the Serengeti looks like a living Windows desktop wallpaper, but with giraffes. Everything is bright green. The grass is fresh. The clouds are incredibly beautiful. Sometimes there's a brief rain shower, and twenty minutes later, a rainbow appears.
This is precisely when many documentary film crews shoot their programs for Animal Planet and Discovery. The reason is very simple—it’s baby season. Thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle calves are born almost simultaneously. And where there are lots of babies, there are always lots of predators: lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards.
The entire savanna turns into a massive, live documentary. Yes, the chance of rain is higher. But honestly, in all these years, I have never once regretted a March safari.
The Serengeti from June to October
If you dream of seeing the famous Great Migration and the dramatic river crossings, then you should plan your trip between June and October. This is the most popular season. The weather is dry. The grass gets shorter. Animals are easier to spot. Your photos will look exactly like National Geographic postcards.
However, thousands of other tourists know this too. Therefore, it is also the busiest time of the year.
Ngorongoro: Open All Year Round
If I were forced to choose just one park in Tanzania, it would probably be Ngorongoro. Because the crater is almost always magnificent. Thousands of animals live here permanently.
Unlike many other parks, the animals here don't undertake massive migrations. So, you can have great safaris almost all year round. The only thing to keep in mind is that it can get very cold here in the mornings. Yes, indeed. It’s that moment when you were swimming in Zanzibar yesterday, and today at 6 AM you're digging through the car looking for another blanket.
Mikumi: The Best Time is the Dry Season
Mikumi is often called the Serengeti's little brother. And that's completely unfair. The park is amazing. Especially for those vacationing in Zanzibar who want to see the real Africa in just one or two days.
The best period is usually from June to October. During this time, the grass is shorter, and animals concentrate around water sources. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and buffaloes become much easier to find. Though honestly, Mikumi manages to pleasantly surprise visitors even in the green season.
Tarangire: The Season of Giants
If you ask me where the most spectacular elephants in Tanzania live, I will name Tarangire without hesitation. From July to October, the park literally becomes the elephant capital. Huge families gather near the Tarangire River. Sometimes it feels like there are more elephants here than tourists. Although, in the high season, that difference becomes minimal.
In addition to elephants, there are incredible baobabs here. Those are the trees that look as if someone planted them upside down.
So, When is the Best Time to Go?
The right answer is—always.
- If you dream of lush green landscapes, baby animals, and dramatic clouds—choose March and early April.
- If you want classic Africa with golden savannas and the migration—choose June, July, August, September, or October.
- If you want to see the maximum number of animals in one day—Ngorongoro almost never disappoints.
- If you are relaxing in Zanzibar and want a quick safari getaway—Mikumi is a perfect choice.
The biggest mistake tourists make is thinking there is one single perfect month for all of Tanzania. There isn't. There is only the perfect park for your expectations. And that's exactly why we ask a lot of questions first, and only then put together an itinerary.
Because a great safari doesn't start in the park. It starts with proper planning.
