The Biggest Disappointment on a Safari

Do you know what the biggest disappointment for tourists on a safari is? No, it’s not the lack of lions. And it’s not even the rain.

The gambling letdown happens… even before the trip begins. It’s when a person opens their safari itinerary for the very first time and sees: Wake-up call at 5:00 AM.

Every time, at that exact moment, I can almost hear the same thought running through their heads: "Can’t we start around ten? We’re on vacation, after all…" No, we can’t.

Because animals, unfortunately, don't know how to read tourist schedules. And they are generally very bad at making compromises.

There is another thing that is impossible to explain to someone until they actually set foot in the savanna: a safari is not a zoo. No one knows where the lions will be today. No one can guarantee that a leopard will decide to pose beautifully just for your jeep. And certainly, no one is going to notify the elephants that you’ve only come for two days and are deeply counting on a meeting.

But you know what? That is exactly where the magic lies.

Almost all tourists arrive with the exact same bucket list: lions, rhinos, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hippos. The mental checkboxes are already ticked: done ✔️

But just one day passes… and something very strange happens. A person stops counting the animals. They begin to feel Africa.

Suddenly, it turns out:

  • that a herd of two hundred elephants triggers far more pure emotion than a single sleeping lion;
  • that giraffes are unimaginably beautiful;
  • that warthogs are the funniest creatures on the planet;
  • that jackals aren't the villains cartoons made them out to be (by the way, everyone who has ever been on a safari with me already knows that I have a major soft spot for these creatures);
  • that a sunset over the savanna cannot be captured by any camera;
  • and that silence… can also be beautiful.

People come to Africa looking for animals. But they find something else entirely - themselves. Because it’s impossible to live here at your usual frantic pace. You stop checking your phone. You stop thinking about work. You stop rushing somewhere. You just sit in the car, watching a family of elephants walk slowly by, and for the first time in a very long while, you are in no hurry.

And that’s when the most unexpected thing happens. On the final day of the safari, I ask my guests: "So, what impressed you the most?"

And you know what's surprising? Almost no one answers: "The lion."

Someone unexpectedly confesses their love for hippos. And one of my tourists said in all seriousness: "The warthog. Because it runs so funnily with its tail pointing straight up into the air."

The biggest disappointment on a safari only exists until the moment a person falls in love with Africa. People come for the animals. But they return for a completely different reason.
