Is a Safari Dangerous? Can Animals Attack the Car? Or "What if a Lion Attacks?..."

I think I’ve been asked this question about… a million times. And almost always in a whisper: "What if it… jumps into the car?"

Because for some reason, tourists imagine a safari as an action movie where something in every single bush is trying to eat you.

But when they get to the park, during the first few minutes of meeting the animals, many seem almost disappointed: "Why aren't the zebras afraid of us at all?"

In reality, most animals perceive a safari vehicle as part of the landscape - just a big metallic bug on wheels. As long as you sit quietly, don't wave your hands, don't yell, and don't try to take a selfie with a buffalo's nose - you are completely uninteresting to them.

Of course, there are moments that make your heart beat somewhere near your ears. For example:

  • when an elephant walks straight toward our car;
  • when a lion lies down in the shade right under our jeep and growls from time to time;
  • when a cheetah jumps right onto the roof of our vehicle (yes, that happens periodically too).

In all my time here, I’ve seen hundreds of lions, thousands of elephants, and probably tens of thousands of other animals. And do you know who creates dangerous situations most often?

Tourists.

The exact ones who just *have* to stand up, lean halfway out of the pop-up roof, shout "here kitty kitty", whistle, or try to get a shot "just half a meter closer".

So my answer is always the same: a safari is safe.

But only if you remember that wildlife is not a zoo or an amusement park. It has its own rules. And if you respect them, instead of horror stories, you will take home the most beautiful, luminous memories. 💚
